Ex-Chelsea boss Antonio Conte is keen on a reunion with Alonso at his new club, Inter Milan. The Spaniard starred in Conte’s title winning Chelsea team in 2016/17 flourishing in his role at wing back.
Although Alonso has made 14 appearances this season for Chelsea, new manager Frank Lampard has appeared to favour Brazilian Emerson Palmieri at left back, with the Englishman turning to a more youthful squad.
Chelsea have been linked with Leicester star Ben Chilwell this month, although with the Foxes unlikely to let him leave, Lampard may line up a bid for Bournemouth defender Nathan Ake to return to Stamford Bridge.
Ake has shown that he is more than capable of playing anywhere across the back line and with the Blues having a clause that allows them to resign the Dutchman for £40 million, the sale of Alonso could go a long way to funding that deal.
Conte still favours wing backs in his formation whilst Lampard prefers a more conventional back four. Plus the emergence of Reece James and Tariq Lamptey at right back has meant Lampard can shift Captain Cesar Azpilicueta to left back if needed.
Alonso’s contract runs until 2023but it looks unlikely that he will see that through with Lampard’s interest to move on.
