Call of Duty: Black Ops 4

For a long while, the Call of Dutyrelease schedule was fairly predictable, with three Activision studios taking turns at putting out their own projects. Infinity Ward released a game. After that, Sledgehammer followed. Then Treyarch came in. This cycle worked well for a few years, until something caused Activision to flip over the table for 2020’s Call of Dutytitle.

We’re not sure what changed, butaccording to Kotaku‘s Jason Schreier, Treyarch — which last released Call of Duty: Black Ops 4in 2018 — is up to bat once again, and is reportedly planning another game in the Black Ops universe. We don’t know much about this project yet, but we’ve gathered the information wedohave below, and we’ll keep updating it as time goes on.

Here’s all the dirt we have so far on the purported Call of Duty: Black Ops 5.

What is the release date for Call of Duty: Black Ops 5?

Seasons show up at the same time every year, and in that way, they’re not unlike Call of Duty. Just about every major release in the series has reliably dropped in the fall, and we see no reason for that to change withCall of Duty: Black Ops 5.

As to whenin the fall we could see Activision’s new shooter, that could depend largely on whether or not the game has support for Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5, which both launch in Holiday 2020. We could see Black Ops 5dropping in November or December as a day one launch title for both platforms. Or, if Black Ops 5isn’t concerned with the next generation just yet, it could come in October as usual.

We’ll keep you posted.

Is there a trailer for Call of Duty: Black Ops 5?

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4

Will Black Ops 5even be the name of this year’sCall of Duty? That’s a question we cannot definitively answer, as the title has not yet been announced. We do know, however, that we probably won’t be getting a trailer for the next CoDuntil Activision is good and ready to start promoting it, which could happen sometime within the next few months.

We’ll be keeping our eyes on Activision’s Twitter feed, particularly as E3 2020 approaches. Sony won’t have a presence at the show this year, which could rob Activision of a stage to show off the title. But we have a feeling the company will find some other means to announce its new Call of Dutyto the world, even if it’s just a trailer getting published out of nowhere. Stay tuned.

Will there be a campaign in Call of Duty: Black Ops 5?

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4

Thanks to 2018’sCall of Duty: Black Ops 4, the question we’re asking this year isn’t, “What will the nextBlack Opscampaign be like?” but instead, “WillBlack Ops 5have a campaign at all?” The franchisefamously skipped out on a campaignwith its fourth entry in the Black Opssub-series, and though 2019’s Modern Warfarebrought back a dedicated story mode, there’s no guarantee Black Ops 5will do the same.

We’ll update you as soon as we learn more, but before we move on, we will leave you with an idea from IGN‘s Ryan McCaffrey. On a February 2020 episode of Podcast Unlocked, McCaffrey speculated thatthe next Call of Dutycould rebootBlack Ops, just as 2019’s Modern Warfareessentially restarted that line of games. We can’t speak to the likelihood of that occurring — we’re all in the dark about the next CoDright now — but it’s something to think about.

Which platforms will Call of Duty: Black Ops 5 be on?

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4

Call of Duty: Modern Warfarereleased on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One in 2019. The year before that, Call of Duty: Black Ops 4came to the same platforms. We expect Black Ops 5won’t break with tradition, though there is one thing you should look out for: potential support for Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5, which both arrive during Holiday 2020.

It’s also worth noting that cross-platform multiplayer support was introduced in 2019’s Modern Warfare. That’s a feature we could see return in Black Ops 5, ensuring you can playCall of Duty with friends regardless of the platform you choose. We’ll keep an eye out for more information on that and let you know if it’s confirmed.
